Street of Facades
The red rose colored rocks of the entire hidden city of Petra can almost be described as a colorful wax masterpiece. As the sun sets, the pinkish color breaks through which is simply a gift of nature that works on all the senses. Seeing it is not quite believing it. The sound of horses, carriages, donkeys, people and the cracking of sand and stone while walking transcends you into another world. As part of its nature, it is acceptable to touch the rocks and carvings of Petra, which contributes to an attack of the senses.
Most people are so awe struck by the Treasury and the anticipation of the Monastery, that they focus less on what lies in between. The Streets of Facades is literally a walkway with Nabatean tombs and caves on each side, including a Byzantine church. The history, heritage and mere skills of humans carving into rock is all encompassing. Not only do the caves and tombs draw attention, but the closer you get to the rocks, the more you see the multi colored layers of rock. On the right you will find more facades that are slightly hidden.
This street is nearly one kilometer long and each time you turn your head the color of the rocks seem to change. You feel quite small and insignificant when walking along the massive structures. The Roman columns and amphitheatre add to the impression that Petra was a place that would have been been on the wish list of many conquerors of the world. People who have visited the toilet facilities would say that never have they relieved their bladders surrounded by such white, pink, red and black layered rocks.
The Street of Facades offers more than just awe at the fact that temples, tombs and art was worked into sandstone rocks, but the Nabatean builders also incorporated building styles of the Babylonians, Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. Once again, the neighboring cultures make their appearance which contributes to their camaraderie.
It is suggested to make use of a guide to explain the various tombs and especially the Roman ruins that make part of this magnificent area.
