Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World. Modern buildings blend with the remnants of ancient civilizations. The mix of gleaming white houses, kebab stalls with roasting meat and tiny cafes conjure a mood straight from a thousand and one nights. One hundred years ago the city barely existed, now it is built on seven hills, or jabals, each of which more or less defines a neighborhood. The city is visually striking - with few exceptions, no building is allowed to be more than four stories high and all must be built with the white limestone taken from the earth surrounding Amman.
