This large open-air museum was once named Ipet-isut, which means "the most selected of places", and was the most important place for worship. Its construction began in the Middle Kingdom (2000-1700 BC) and continued for about 1,300 years. The complex is famous with its Great Hypostyle Hall housing 134 giant columns. The next stop will be at the sandstone Luxor Temple built by Amenhotep III and completed by Tutankhamun; Ramses II and Alexander the Great made some additions to it. At the entrance you will find the pylon, built and decorated by Ramesses II. Once it was adorned by six massive royal statues and two obelisks, though today one of them is preserved in Paris.
