Visit one of the largest and well-preserved Coptic monasteries in Egypt. Abandoned today, Saint Simeon Monastery was once a shelter for about thousand monks. Explore this ancient monument located on a hilltop opposite to Elephantine Island.

Our guide will meet you at your hotel in Aswan and take you to the Saint Simeon Monastery built in the 6-7 centuries. Once it was called Anba Hedra, after a bishop, who forswore the world on his wedding day and lived his life as a hermit. The monastery that used to have 10-meter-high walls and towers providing monks' security was partly destroyed by Saladin in 1173. The upper layer of the monument built of mudbrick is almost vanished, while its lower stone layer is perfectly preserved. Here you will also find an old cemetery with some 200 tombstones dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries and a small church with some beautiful frescos.
